East Belfast Wins Lottery Millions

East Belfast communities are celebrating their success as Connswater Community Greenway secures a £23m grant from the Big Lottery Fund’s Living Landmarks programme. The project is one of three successful projects in the UK and the only project in Northern Ireland to be awarded Living Landmarks funding.

The Connswater Community Greenway is an extensive environmental improvement project costing £30m and connecting 379 acres of public open space, building 43 bridges and 19kms of cycle and walkways. Just under 50,000 people living adjacent to the greenway will benefit from a better living environment and opportunities for leisure, exercise, recreation and supporting healthier lifestyles.

The project will be managed by East Belfast Partnership which applied to the Living Landmarks Programme for a £23m grant to develop this linear park through East Belfast allowing people to travel along the course of the Connswater, Knock and Loop rivers, connecting people and places from Castlereagh Hills to Belfast Lough.

BIG Announcement

Due to decades of underinvestment in the area the open spaces alongside the rivers are currently underused, inaccessible, unsafe and unconnected to the communities. The Connswater Community Greenway will create a safe, welcoming and open public space for residents and visitors to East Belfast.

Construction will commence in early 2009. Stayed tuned to this website for further information.
