Construction of the Greenway continues with significant changes

Over the last few weeks the project has made considerable progress with the opening of the C.S. Lewis Square on Tuesday 22nd November.  The last of the remaining art was installed and remainder of the trees planted just in time for the opening.

Only two sections of flood wall work remain; two flood walls to be poured at Ladas Drive and at the retail park at Connswater. The rest of the flood walls are in place and work on the hand rails from Severn Street to Sydenham is progressing well at this stage.

All play park equipment has now been installed in the two play parks and work is currently underway on the surface for the playparks. Levelling and soft landscaping work is in progress in Avoniel Park as well as the section from Ladas Way to Castlereagh Road. Also at this section, work on the boardwalk nears completion.

River mitigation work is being carried out across all sections; work from Ladas Drive down to Montgomery Road is complete as is the area from Ladas Way to Castlereagh Road. Work is also largely complete from Mersey Street bridge to Sydenham Bypass as well as the section from Severn Street to Mersey Street.

Kerbing and paving work on the Cregagh Road is now complete, with attention now focused on planting a number of trees at the shops and the installation of the street furniture including bins. Kerbing and paving work has begun on Mersey Street bridge to link both these sections.

Tree planting is on-going at Avoniel park with a number of trees planted this week and many more to be planted. In this section we will be carrying out Community Planting with children from Elmgrove Primary School and a number of locals residents. This section of the Greenway will be in full bloom in Spring 2017 with over 2,000 bulbs due to be planted.
